After returning back to our hotel to meet back up with our friends, we thought we’d enjoy one last Mai Tai and burger by the pool.  Unfortunately, the pool bar was closed at that time.  It was to re-open 30mibs later but we needed to get something and stay on track with time.  We decided to go to the mall that’s close by and get something quick from the food court.  I had a grilled mahi mahi burger and Deniz enjoyed a burger.  Our final drive to the airport gave us one last spectacular sunset.

We drove over to the Marriott where we honeymoon’ to look around.  They expanded the beach and changed a few things.  We decided to walk the trail between the Marriott and Hilton complexes.  The waves were quite large (10-12′ ) and there were surfers out.  We watched for a bit and continued on. Last time there had been a tree swing that we thought was pretty neat.  The coast had changed a bit and the old one was not around any longer but there was a new one.  Pretty neat.  I took photos with my main camera.  The views were quite impressive and we both were glad we took this stroll to our familiar place.  Brought back memories from last time.

It’s a cloudy cool morning for our last day, except for a clearing where the moon is showing itself.  We can barely see the mountains so it could also be a lot of volcanic gas.

We drove to Hilo through the mountain route today.  The view is pretty amazing at the top although there’s not a lot to look at.  The lava field is pretty fresh and it feels like we were on another planet.

We visited the Akatsuka Orchid Garden. I had no idea there were so many different types.  Too bad we can’t take back anything.

We had lunch at Ocean Sushi in Hilo.  Pretty good.  It wasn’t excellent but was very good.

There are some very old buildings in Hilo.

Last night we all went on a sunset and whale watching cruise aboard a catamaran.  We got lucky as we sighted many whales although none would show much of themselves, and the sunset was spectacular!  The food was ok, but the ride  and expertise of the crew was outstanding.  Although we could not get too close (the boats have to keep a respectable distance) there was quite a bit of whale activity. We saw a few calves swimming with their mother.  I only got one on a dive showing its tail in the process. We had a lively and fun crowd as well.  Mix that with an open bar and it was pretty entertaining at times.

We enjoyed a nice morning at Mauna Kea beach.  Lots of sand, shady spots and gentler waves.  I actually wanted the larger waves but with things being a little calmer the water was much more clearer for some underwater GoPro footage.

Another nice sunset this evening.  We were driving back and caught it in our mirror behind us.

My Managers’ step mom lives here on the Big Island and we met her today for drinks and pupus.  Very nice meeting her and she generously treated us.  For those wondering as much as I was, “pupus” is appetizer in Hawaiian.  We enjoyed ahi poke pupus today. Poke is raw fish salad.  It was presented nicely in a bamboo bowl. I forgot to take a picture.

We ate at Huggo’s by the Rocks.  A nice place right by the shore in downtown Kona.  The only place where there’s a sandy patio.  Very neat.

We started our day with a trip down to Kona and up the mountain to the top where Mountain Thunder Coffee is.  They were just starting a tour but having experienced that 5 years ago we decided to skip it.  We went through their store to pick up some coffee.

Next, on the way down the hill a bit we stopped in at Ueshima Coffee Co. (UCC). They allowed us to walk around the plantation (Mountain Thunder wouldn’t).  They also gave us some free samples.  Here’s a picture from the plantation overlooking the ocean.
