Roof

If you’ve been to our house in recent years you probably noticed our shingles were quite worn and in some parts curling. This year we figured we better stop counting our luck and get the roof re-shingled. I began the task by looking up local roofers. We always like to support local businesses where we can. Almost everyone has a contact form on their websites. I contacted four companies to start. After a few days I got a call from two and set up appointments for a quote. First roofer never showed up. I wrote to him next morning to see what happened. He first apologized and said he ran late on a job and promptly rebooked me for the weekend. The next day after the first roofer was supposed to come, I was stood up yet again by the second roofer. I was not going to follow up with this second vendor. I then got back on the internet and contacted three more roofers. One of them local and the other two from Toronto but advertising they do Georgetown. While waiting for these next group to contact me the first roofer came for his rebooked appointment.

He was almost 20mins late and I was wondering if he was going to be a no-show again. But he finally arrived and did a walk around. I remember from years ago a friend of mine in the industry mentioned that we did not have enough roof vents. I brought this up and he said all that might be required is a turbine vent that will draw the hot air out. But he felt the number of existing vents were fine. I thought he was going to examine the roof but he just eye balled it and provided me with a quote.

I was then contacted by Halton Hills Roofing and set up an appointment for a quote. Ashur arrived pretty much on time. I walked around with him and we discussed various options for the job. When we first went around back he right away pointed out that we did not have nearly enough roof vents. And the ones we had were not high and close enough to the peak to properly vent out the hot air. He then grabbed his ladder and climbed up on the roof to take a closer look. He flipped up the shingles to discover they were put down directly on the roof boards. No vapor barrier. Nothing. He suggested leaf guards as we have a lot of trees and would save a lot of cleaning and clogging of the eaves and drains. After discussing various options I came to a basic decision of what we would be interested in. He then wrote up a quote that was a bit lower than the previous vendor.

Deniz and I reviewed both quotes and decided to go with Ashur and Halton Hills Roofing. They were the only vendor to respond so quickly and show up first time as arranged. He was also the only one to climb on the roof to further examine the current state. I contacted Ashur to let him know they were our choice. Unfortunately the intense heat slowed them down and we had to wait about a month before they finally started.

They started Thursday, July, 12th and finished up Wednesday, July 18th. They did not work on the 14, 15 and 16 due to heat and rain. They kept the mess to a minimum and were friendly and courteous.

Then the vapour barrier.

Ice shield and leaf guard was added as well. They removed the old chimney, added four more vents in the back, a few more in the front and removed all the old satellite dishes no longer in use. The final result looks great. We chose two tone black shingles which looks great.

The crew at Halton Hills Roofing did a great job. The roof looks great! The roof looks so much cleaner without all the obsolete junk up there. Most importantly, there had been an opening up near the soffit by the chimney where squirrels and mice were running in and out of that is now sealed up. There had always been the puttering of squirrels running on the roof and in the soffits. So far it has been so nice and quiet. The hole above the front porch is also fixed. No more rain leaking through. Feels great (except the payment part) to have this all done.

  1. What are we here for? Do not ever forget that you have another house in Georgetown.
