Traffic, traffic and more traffic

I have never seen traffic before like I have in Istanbul. For us familiar with Toronto traffic at rush hour, picture that….then take away lanes because they just become suggestions on where you should be driving……add in hundreds more motorcycles, weaving in and out wherever there is space for them to fit…..add in pedestrians that will cross the street when and where they like and add in the use of horns. Actually Athens was the same as well. Drivers drive where they see room. There may only be 3 lanes for your direction but due to the congestion, the traffic will make 4. Cars are literally bumper to bumper and door to door. If you leave a bit of space in front be prepared for someone else to make a radical move into it. We were on an entrance ramp this evening that was supposed to be just one lane but somehow everyone made 3. Lots of angry horn honking can be heard along with some yelling and hand gestures. But the one thing I credit people over here with is the ability to express their thoughts and let it go. In North America everyone seems to have this ‘revenge’ thing……where they cannot let something go and must get back at the other guy. That’s really not seen here. Another thing I noticed here for the most part is if a more aggressive driver is passing in the left lane they will almost always get out of the way for a faster car coming up from behind. Again unlike back home where it seems people think it’s their right to drive in any lane they please and do not have to move for anyone. Flashing of headlights here with or without the honk of a horn means “get moving or get out of the way”. Back home in North America it means “slam on your brakes and I want to fight you”. The level of aggression on the road can certainly be scary but I like how there is at least no interest in revenge here.
